We are fortunate to
have international celebrities such as Sir Patrick Moore, Dr John
Mason and leading members of the NASA organisation as our advisors,
enabling us to offer Durban the foremost advances in Planetarium and
Observatory technology and design currently available. In addition,
a local member, Hilton Ratcliffe—an internationally acclaimed author
and astrophysicist, who co-authored a book with Sir Patrick—is on
the planning committee.
Our national associates
in Johannesburg and Cape Town, some of whom serve (or have served)
on the Board of SALT in Sutherland, such as Professors Philip
Charles, Ian Glass and George Ellis are at our disposal to enhance
and update our plans so that the most up-to-date facility is
eventually built for the city.
The membership of the
Astronomical Society of Southern Africa, Durban comprises of civil,
mechanical and chemical engineers, IT Specialists and a number of
individuals with professional qualifications whose expertise will be
given gratis during the planning stages. In addition, a number of
local academics in the fields of Astrophysics, Applied Mathematics,
Geology etc are either members or associate members of the Society.
